Dotted Blazingstar (Liatris punctata)
The stems of this wildflower start out as though they will grow along the ground then curve up to form a many-stemmed plant standing 10-30 cm tall. The small rosy-coloured flowers appear in August on crowded spikes concentrated toward the end of the stems. The Dotted Blazingstar grows most often on dry prairie hillsides and open grassy meadows in the southern part of the province. Many insects, birds, and mammals use different parts of this plant, and a number of different garden cultivars have been developed to take advantage of its natural beauty.
