Lindley's Aster (Aster ciliolatus )
This is an aster of sunny moist open places on the prairie and clearings in wooded areas of the parkland. Even without flowers, this perennial plant is quite striking, growing up to 1 m in height with reddish-coloured stems and alternate dark green leaves. The typically blue violet flowers with yellow centres, appearing in August-September, are attractive to bees and butterflies. There are many species of wild asters and because they cross-pollinate readily, they are often hard to tell apart. Aster is the Greek word for star.
