Many-Flowered Aster (Aster pansus)

This is one of the latest blooming wildflowers found on the Canadian prairies. Flowers appear in August-September. The numerous small, white, daisy-like flowers have a yellow centre and are clustered tightly near the ends of the many-branched stem. The plant stems are tough and hairy growing from a tufted rootstock to a height of 20-60 cm and support alternately positioned long narrow leaves. This aster is found most often in sandy saline soils on the edge of thickets and in open meadows and roadside ditches. It is believed that the many closely bunched flowers enhance the chance of cross-fertilization because an insect cannot crawl over the plant without spreading pollen between flowers.
