In the Community: What's In Bloom
Northern Bedstraw (Galium boreale)
In the wild this shade-loving perennial plant can be found adjacent to trees and shrubs where it is at least partially shaded and the environment is somewhat moist. The name bedstraw comes from its use by pioneers to fill mattresses with the sweet-smelling plants after they had been dried. Northern Bedstraw blooms in July-August and its clumps of small, fragrant, white flowers on slender square stalks are nicely framed by rings of bright green leaves in groups of four around the stem.
