In the Community: What's In Bloom
Slender Beardtongue (Pentstemon procerus)
This relatively short plant (10-30 cm) has many small deep-blue flowers growing in compact clusters along the upper part of each stem. Each flower is less than 1 cm long, but because there are many on each of numerous stems, they put on a beautiful show. The plant blooms for a long time from late May until August. The scientific name Pentstemon refers to the five stamens. The common name beardtongue derives from the fact that one of the stamens as well as the lower lip of the tubular flower are both bearded with fine smooth hairs. This perennial normally lives only a few years but we have enjoyed this prairie beauty in the native plant garden at the RSM for over a decade.
