In the Community: What's In Bloom
Stiff Goldenrod (Solidago rigida)
Goldenrods are showy plants with a dozen or so species occurring in Saskatchewan alone. Stiff Goldenrod is commonly found in prairie habitat and in forest meadows throughout southern Saskatchewan and is one of the most numerous plants in the RSM’s native plant garden. Typically blooming in late summer (August-September), goldenrod seed heads stay on the plants well into the winter. Contrary to popular belief, goldenrods do not cause hay fever but they do attract bees, butterflies, and birds to their blossoms and seed heads. The flower heads of Stiff Goldenrod are flat topped compared to many other goldenrod species, and the stems are particularly stiff and strong.
