Western Red Lily (Lilium philadelphicum var. andinum)
This beautiful plant, often called the “prairie lily,” is Saskatchewan’s provincial flower. The flowers are bright orange, ranging to almost red, dotted with black near the base of the petals and appear at the top of an upright stem of 20 to 60 cm. The smooth leaves alternate part way up the stem and then become whorled near the top. June is the best time to see these flowers but remember that it is illegal to pick or destroy this plant so leave the flowers for others to enjoy. The Western Red Lily copes with unsuitable growing conditions like drought by delaying flowering, sometimes for up to 6 or 7 years, surviving off the food stored in its roots and bulbs.
