In the Community: What's In Bloom
Western Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa)
The term fistulosa in the name of this beautiful wildflower means tube-like, a description of the shape of the individual pink, mauve, or white flowers. The flowers bloom in July-August and are found at the top of relatively tall square-shaped stems. Bergamot is a member of the Mint family and has the distinctively pleasant odour of Earl Grey tea. This plant has been developed as a horticultural beauty in the domestic garden as well as for production of various oils and fragrances in perfumes and soaps. The wild version is most attractive to many interesting and beneficial insects as well as hummingbirds.
