In the Community: What's In Bloom
This delicate-looking white-flowered plant is very common on open prairie and along roadsides. Yarrow flowers from June until August, its bright, white, flat-topped flower heads shining in the grass or among other prairie wildflowers. The leaves of yarrow are very lacy, or in botanical terms, much-divided: thus, the name millefolium meaning a thousand leaves. Yarrow seed heads can be identified easily in the fall and are useful for dried flower arrangements. Yarrow is an edible food as well as a potent medicine for a variety of ailments. It dates back in fossil records for more than 60,000 years.
