Discovery Series 1: Weather Forecasting for Fun

On February 2nd, Groundhog Day, the RSM "kicked off" its new Centennial Discovery Series with a light-hearted look at Saskatchewan weather. We featured predictions by many local celebrities, including politicians such as Premier Lorne Calvert and Mayor Pat Fiacco, local weather anchors, a meteorologist from Environment Canada, a trapper and the "Pig Spleen Man". The event opened with a performance by Dance City Inc. and followed with a reception with mulled wine (non-alcoholic) and cookies.

Brian Johns presented an overview on what the Canadian Wildlife Service is doing to monitor and protect the cranes in North America. And Joe Duff, of Operation Migration, talked about their exciting program of "imprinting" young Whooping Cranes to ultralight planes and then leading them on a migrational journey from Wisconsin south to Florida.

On August 3rd, visitors heard dinosaur expert Dr. Philip Currie discuss tyrannosaurs, including Saskatchewan's own "Scotty" the T. rex, and the link between dinosaurs and birds. Dr. Harold Bryant also discussed Saskatchewan fossils and palaeontology at the RSM. The local group Lazer Blade performed original music developed especially for this program. Free refreshments followed the program.

July 16th to 22nd was a week of field trips, RSM tours (galleries, exterior architecture and behind-the-scenes), demonstrations and films.

We kicked off RSM Centennial Week on Sunday, July 16th at 2:00 p.m. with a parade recognizing the last 100 years that included the Lieutenant Governor with the Landau, a 1906 carriage, vintage and modern cars from each decade, RCMP, First Nations and Métis horses and riders, and a marching band. The parade route started at Wascana Place (2900 Wascana Drive), traveled north on Broad Street to College Avenue and then traveled west along College Avenue until it reached the Royal Saskatchewan Museum parking lot (parade route map). The official ceremony followed on the front lawn of the RSM with Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco as the Master of Ceremonies and remarks by the Lieutenant Governor, Minister Glenn Hagel, and other dignitaries. The party continued with entertainment by Brenda Baker (singer and song writer), Saskatchewan Express (dancers and singers), Terrence Littletent (hoop dancer), and the launch of the RSM Centennial video. Lemonade and ice cream were distributed to everyone.
