1959 Royal Visit

Queen Elizabeth and her husband, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, visited the Museum on July 23, 1959. Their visit was widely anticipated by staff, who spent weeks sprucing up exhibits, and by the general public, over 4,000 of whom showed up to watch the Queen arrive. The driveway to the Museum was lined with RCMP officers, 40 in red serge and 90 from the training depot, and the Regina Separate Schools' Band.

The royal party arrived 15 minutes ahead of schedule, throwing the organized CBC camera crew into a frenzy. There were also several representatives from the local media and photographers present to record the visit.

After being introduced to the Museum director Fred G. Bard and his wife, as well as some Museum staff members, the Queen and Prince Philip were given a private tour by the director that lasted about 25 minutes.

Mr. Bard was very impressed with the royal couple during the tour, noting that both the Queen and Prince Philip had a good knowledge of natural history and were very observant. The two exhibits portraying 'Bambi' and buffalo were examined very closely by the royal party. The exhibit where they spent the most time, however, was at one illustrating First Nations and Métis trading. In this exhibit, Prince Philip admired an old rifle and picked up the handles of the Red River Cart with Mr. Bard. The Queen was especially interested in the trade negotiation represented by a seated First Nation and a standing Métis offering a pelt for examination.

After the private tour, the Queen thanked Mr. Bard and drove away with her husband amid loud cheers from the crowd assembled out front.
