Our Programs (October to May)

First Nations Programs

Family Life (Grades K - 1) Family Life Teacher's Guide
Students learn about Plains Cree families through discovery and stories, just like children of long ago.  The importance of cooperation is the central theme.  Children hear a Plains Cree story and visit the First Nations Gallery.

Time Well Spent (Grades 2-3) Time Well Spent Teacher's Guide
This program looks at the importance of toys, games and leisure for First Nations people long ago and today.  Students play a variety of games.  A visit to the First Nations Gallery is included in the program.

Changing Times (Grades 4-6) Changing Times Teacher's Guide.
Students examine the changes in weapons and hunting methods used by First Nations before contact with Europeans.  Students look at authentic stone tools and discuss their manufacture.  A visit to the First Nations Gallery is not included unless requested.

Circle Journey (Grades 5-12)
Classes participate in a study of the First Nations Gallery that introduces the students to the cultures of the first inhabitants of Saskatchewan.




Earth Sciences Programs

Discovering Dinosaurs (Grades K-3) Discovering Dinosaurs Teacher's Guide
Which dinosaurs lived here and what do we know about them?  Through use of hands-on replicas and real fossils, students explore Saskatchewan's dinosaurs.  A visit to the Earth Sciences Gallery is included in the program.

Saskatchewan Rocks (Grades 4 - 6) Saskatchewan Rocks Teacher's Guide
Students dig into Saskatchewan's rocks and fossils.  The rock cycle and geological history are explored in the Earth Sciences Gallery.  Students examine fossil matrix to locate micro-fossils from the Tertiary Period. 

Big Chill (Saskatchewan Glaciation) (Grades 4-12) Big Chill Teacher's Guide
Explore Saskatchewan 14,000 years ago when glaciers covered most of the province.  Students discover how glaciers shaped the topography and environment that we see today.  A visit to the Earth Sciences Gallery is included in the program.

Time Tunnel (Grades 5-12) Time Tunnel Teacher's Guide
This is a study of the Earth Sciences Gallery.  The program introduces students to the geology and palaeontology of the province.

 

Life Sciences Programs

Safe and Sound (Grades K - 3) Safe and Sound Teacher's Guide
Finding a place to live is not always easy!  This program explores how and where animals make their homes.  A visit to the Life Sciences Gallery is included in the program.

Winter Whys (Grades K - 4) Winter Whys Teacher's Guide
Discover what our native animals and plants do to prepare for our long, cold Saskatchewan winters.  This program has three components, each of which is 30 minutes long.

Choose two to make a one-hour program.
1. Outside trek in Wascana Park
2. Discovery Room (hands-on)
3. Life Sciences Gallery guided tour

Predator & Prey: Adaptations (Grades 3-6) Predator & Prey Teacher's Guide
Through creative and informative Life Sciences Gallery activities, students will discover ways in which animals have adapted to avoid being eaten or to be successful predators.

Ecosystem Lab (Grades 4-8) Ecosystem Lab Teacher's Guide
This program is designed to introduce students to the human impact on Saskatchewan environments and the need to balance resource use with conservation.  This program has three components, each of which is 30 minutes long.

Choose two to make a one-hour program.
1. Outside in the Park: Sampling Techniques
2. Life Sciences Gallery: Environmental Impacts Game
3. Discovery Room: Build an Ecosystem

Please indicate your two choices when booking your program.

Trails to Tomorrow (Grades 5 - 12)
This is a one-hour study of the Life Sciences Gallery.  The program introduces students to Saskatchewan's natural diversity and explores human impact on nature.  Students and teachers will be challenged to respond to the issues of conservation.
