Collections & Conservation: Earth Sciences Unit

The Earth Sciences collection consists of more than 25,000 catalogued fossils, mostly from Saskatchewan, and some rocks and minerals as well. The collection includes everything from tiny fossil fragments such as teeth, to entire skeletons, such as that of "Scotty," the Tyrannosaurus rex. These specimens provide important clues for discovering how Saskatchewan's landscapes and environments have evolved and changed over the last 2 billion years.

The RSM preserves the province's fossil and geological heritage. The fossils and rock samples are used for educational purposes, such as in the RSM's exhibits and school programs, and for public presentations. And, of course, they are used in ongoing research, which contributes to our knowledge of Saskatchewan's distant past.
