FAQS: Aboriginal History Unit

What do you do when you find a site?

The first thing you should have done was get your Avocational Archaeology Permit from the Heritage Branch. But if you don’t have a permit yet, don’t panic.

If you do find a site, contact an archaeologist at a museum, university, or government office. You can also contact the provincial or state archaeological society (see our Related Sites section). You will need to tell the archaeologist:

· where you found the artifact

· a legal land description (section-township-range) is ideal, but if you don’t have that information, a very exact description of the location relative to a nearby town is also helpful

· the land owner’s name (remember, you shouldn’t be wandering on someone else’s land without his/her permission)

· a description of what you found.

For further information contact the Curator of Aboriginal History
