FAQS: Earth Sciences Unit

Can anyone collect fossils in Saskatchewan?

Yes, but first you need to get a permit from the provincial government. According to provincial legislation, as stated in the Heritage Property Act, all fossils in Saskatchewan are property of the Crown. The purpose of this Act, along with the more recent Royal Saskatchewan Museum Act, is to protect and preserve fossils for their scientific value, education and enjoyment of everyone in the province.
