FAQS: Exhibits Unit

How many people were involved in building the Life Sciences Gallery?

The team includes:

· the museum director who guides the overall Museum themes and arranges for financial support of the project;

· a designer who develops the overall plan for the Gallery and oversees the content and look of each diorama;

· curatorial staff who approve the scientific content of the Gallery;

· an exhibits supervisor who manages and oversees deadlines and budgets;

· two carpenters/exhibits specialists who build everything from beaver lodges to fibre-optic displays;

· three foreground specialists who build artificial plants, bugs and animals, collect natural materials, and install the exhibit foregrounds so that they blend with the paintings;

· a designer/computer graphics specialist who develops the look and layout for exhibits and the website;

· a visual media/public relations co-ordinator who deals with publicizing museum events and organizes museum photographs/video;

· a taxidermist/sculptor who creates some of the smaller animal mounts like birds and rodents, and sculpts other exhibit components;

· a screenprinting specialist who transfers text and illustrations onto panels which are installed throughout the gallery;

· an information technology specialist who organizes the layout and develops the content and text for interactive computer displays;

· a text/audio/photography specialist, who collects sound recordings and photographs in the field, and develops text for the gallery;

· countless volunteers who work tirelessly on building foreground components like artificial plants and monarch butterflies;

· numerous dioramists hired as contractors to paint the backgrounds, build specific exhibit components and install foreground;

· an electronics specialist, who wires up the animatronic effects in the Gallery, and writes the computer programs that open and close the butterflies’ wings, turn the owl’s head, and cause the snake’s tail to rattle;

· and many construction contractors who build the walls, install flooring, lighting, electrical fixtures, etc.
