FAQS: Life Sciences Unit

Is it true that there are scorpions in Saskatchewan?

Yes, believe it or not, one species of scorpion, Paruroctonus boreus, lives in Canada. In Saskatchewan, it is found in the dry grasslands to the southwest, and spends most of its time under rocks and in crevices. These scorpions are small (roughly 4 cm in length) and are very rarely seen because they come out only at night to hunt. Their venom can kill small invertebrates, but to humans their sting is no worse than that of a honey bee.
