FAQS: Life Sciences Unit
What should I do to avoid hantavirus?
| Abandoned buildings and farm buildings are common hang-outs for rodents, and it is important to clean these areas before working in them. If you see the signs of rodents such as droppings, urine stains, gnawing marks, tracks in dusty areas, odours, or nests, be sure to read through the hantavirus safety guidelines provided by Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety before attempting to clean up. |
Gloves, disinfectant, and a well-fitting mask with filters are a must when cleaning, and try to avoid sweeping or otherwise stirring up dry debris. Be especially careful in enclosed rodent-infested spaces with poor ventilation. |
