FAQS: Life Sciences Unit

Garter Snakes are denning in my basement/well in the winter – how do I get rid of them?

Garter snakes need a warm, dry place in order to survive the winter, and once they have located a spot, they mark it with scent trails and return year after year. Garter snakes are actually clean and harmless, will feed on insects around your home, and they are fascinating to watch! However, if you feel they are too close for comfort, you can try waiting until the spring when they all leave the den for their hunting grounds. Then carefully plug any holes or cracks that lead to the basement or well.
