Saskatchewan Butterfly Count

Every June, the RSM takes part in an annual butterfly survey called the 4th of July Count. This is an event coordinated by the North American Butterfly Association (NABA) with participants throughout Canada, the U.S., and parts of Mexico. Volunteers and Museum staff identify and count the butterflies they see within a 24 km diameter circle of Regina, and this data is sent to NABA. NABA compiles information from surveys across North America, allowing them to monitor what butterfly species are present and how many, how their numbers have changed, and whether these changes are due to natural causes or human activity. The RSM has been conducting annual counts since 1996.
