Prairie Nest Records Scheme
Nest records can help us learn about avian breeding biology, including the capacity of species to respond to changes in climate or land use. The Prairie Nest Records Scheme began about the time that intensive, industrialized agriculture was becoming the dominant land use on the Canadian prairies. The Saskatchewan portion is housed by the RSM and represents a collection of over 25,000 cards. About half of the collection has been digitized and interpreted using standardized codes developed through Bird Studies Canada (BSC) and other organizations. The rest of the cards are now being computerized and the entire data set will be used for studies aimed at species and habitat conservation, the potential effects of climate change, and other questions.
